Your assignment
The assistant controller requires an ability to be both proactive and reactive to the detailed needs of the company. This position plays a critical role in supporting the controller in managing day-to-day accounting operations, with a particular emphasis on providing functional oversight and support to the accounts receivable and accounts payable teams.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on performer with strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of GAAP, and a commitment to continuous process improvement.
Essential duties:
- Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Support general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements (e.g., GAAP, tax filings).
- Assist in preparation and communications with external auditors as needed.
- Analyze and opine on monthly/quarterly/annual financial performance.
- Monitor AR aging and work with AR team to address aged or troubled accounts.
- Support and provide back-up for the cash application processes and ensure timely posting of customer payments.
- Support and provide back-up for the credit manager by maintaining customer credit policies and assessing creditworthiness of new customers.
- Partner with sales/operations to continuously evaluate and improve processes.
- Oversee AP processes to ensure timely and accurate processing of vendor invoices and payments.
- Support and provide back-up for the AP team in resolving invoice discrepancies, vendor inquiries, and payment issues.
- Partner with supply chain/sourcing in addressing the same.
- Review and approve payment runs in accordance with cash flow planning.
- Enhance and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and accuracy within accounting workflows, as well as across departments.
- Assist in implementing and optimizing planning/financial reporting/ERP/accounting systems and tools.
- Explore new ways to leverage technology within finance and accounting.

- Maintain/improve timeliness and accuracy of vendor payments and discrepancy resolution.
- Maintain/improve timeliness and accuracy of customer payments and discrepancy resolution.
- Maintain/improve timeliness of month-end financial close.
- Deliver on execution of enhanced reporting functionality and other tech initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 5+ years of accounting experience with proven career advancement; preference for experience in public accounting, FP&A role, or assistant controller.
- Technological aptitude with strong Excel skills.
- Ability to manage deadlines while responding to the ever changing requests from the organization.
- Experience in the building materials industry and/or distribution is a plus.
- Familiarity with ERP and financial reporting systems a plus.
